“ Thanks so much to Gayle again for another wonderful stay where we all enjoyed this perfect spot by the Wye. As soon as we turned the corner at the top of the field, we knew why we had returned. That view is 'to die for' and again we were able to indulge in wild swimming, woodland walks and scrambles; spotting a doe and her fawn, canoeing trips, pub meals and drinks, and campfire suppers.
The Hut itself has everything you could ask for and the four of us slept soundly every night in your super comfy beds. We can't wait to come back. Thank you so much..Beth and family
In blissful comfort
The Shepherds Hut is a perfect glamping holiday experience for couples as well as families. The LuxHut (for cooking and bathing) provides hot water for showers, cooking and lighting. Couples can relax, surrounded by nature and enjoy an intimate time together with not a soul to disturb you. Children can run free and enjoy a wild countryside holiday. Everyone can enjoy star gazing, leaping into the river, walking, fishing, cycling... there's something for everyone. Bird watchers will love being close to Symonds Yat and the peregrine falcons. You can simply stay put and enjoy this beautifully peaceful back-to-nature environment or use the Shepherds Hut as a base for exploring the Wye Valley on foot, by bike or by car.
Glamping in a shepherds hut
The Shepherds Hut has a very comfortable double bed plus a set of bunk beds. You may bring your own bed linen or we can provide it at an extra cost. There's a wood burner with a basket of logs for cool evenings and during the colder weather (more logs available to buy). On arrival guests can go straight to the hut, they will be given directions and access code to the field at the time booking is confirmed. The Shepherds Hut is on a working farm with cows, sheep and horses. There is room to park one car close to the hut for easy unpacking/packing. Outside the Shepherds Hut is a fire-pit with a sturdy cooking tripod and cookware for outdoor cooking. You'll also be able to use the wooden outdoor furniture and a hammock.
Your home-from-home luxury
The LuxHut is discretely located just behind the Shepherds Hut. This is where you will find the kitchen two showers and two (you'll love this...) flushing loos.
The LuxHut contains:
NOTE: Mobile reception is patchy so you've got a great excuse to be out of contact with the office.
Dogs, kids, friends...
or just the two of you...
We recommend you bring your wellies, walking boots and a torch. You're welcome to bring up to two well-behaved dogs at a charge of £25 per dog. We do allow dogs inside the huts but because there are sheep, deer and pheasants in the area (and the area is completely unfenced) dogs must be kept on leads outside the Shepherds Hut. Farmers live nearby and the farm office is manned during office hours in case of need or advice
“ As a family we love to stay in beautiful places, and without question, staying at Shadowlands in the Shepherds Hut for a couple of nights was a truly wonderful experience. The Hut is located in amazing countryside with a stunning panoramic view of the Wye valley.
There is fantastic walking, cycling and exploring directly from the Hut which is private and quiet, and just perfect to relax in. As for the accommodation itself, it’s of the very highest standard, extremely comfortable and has every facility that you could wish for.
As a family run business the owner ( who is super friendly) has made sure that every detail has been considered and nothing was too much trouble to organise for us if we’d forgotten to bring something, like our bedding! Favourite memory, sitting around the fire pit watching the kids roast marsh mellows over the open fire. Our stay was perfect and we’d return like a shot. Fabulous!

“ The shepherds hut is just the perfect weekend retreat. Located in the Wye Valley close to the Forest of Dean with the most stunning views imaginable of the three counties of Herefordshire, Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire. Messing about on the river and camp fire suppers. Bliss!
Here are some of our favourite places and things to do in and around the area.
The Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean is the perfect place to explore nature and the great outdoors. A walker's paradise this area of outstanding beauty (AONB) has many walking trails including The Wye Valley Walk and Offa's Dyke. Cycling and Canoeing are fantastic ways to explore the area. There are some very welcoming riverside pubs and restaurants nearby in Symonds Yat and Lydbrook. The old market towns of Ross on Wye and Monmouth just 6 miles away. The Malvern Hills and the Cotswolds are also within easy reach.
Shadowlands is a delight to visit at any time of the year. In springtime, visitors can walk amongst the colourful spring flowers and in late April - early May the bluebells in the woodlands make a breathtaking sight. In summer guests can enjoy the forest in all its green glory and the river Wye at it's most sparkling. Autumn brings a swathe of golden and russet colours throughout the Wye valley and wintertime is best for cosy log fire evenings after a bracing walk in the atmospheric winter wonderland of the forest tracks.
There are some good local pubs nearby serving great food, locally brewed Wye Valley ales and delicious artisan ciders from Wales and Herefordshire. One of our favourite pubs is The Saracens Head which is a brisk 30 - 40 minutes walk away.
The river Wye is just a run down the hill and fishing is available on request. Canoeing and mountain bike hire facilities are nearby.
There are a number of golf courses nearby to Shadowlands including: Forest Hills Golf Club, The Bells (Forest of Dean Golf Club), Monmouth Golf Club, Ross on Wye Golf Club and The championship Rolls Golf Club. A twenty five minute drive will take you to The Celtic Manor championship golf resort.
We are 20 minutes drive from the market town of Monmouth and 30 minutes drive from the picturesque Forest of Dean and Sculpture Trail. Raglan Castle and Tintern Abbey are 30 minutes drive away.
The Forest of Dean's Biggest Adventure Store
APEX OUTDOOR is an adventure shop in the Forest of Dean, selling clothing, camping gear, technical climbing equipment, activity bookings and all with a coffee! apex-outdoor.co.uk
The Shadowlands estate and accommodation is available to hire for film, advertising, corporate events, small festivals or gatherings.
The award winning 1993 movie Shadowlands was filmed in the barn and just metres away from the Shepherds Hut. Richard Attenborough (director), seen here on Symonds Yat rock above the Wye Valley, and the film crew used many shots of this beautiful area for the film.
The early Harry Potter films were also used for the stunning rural location.

“ We have had the most wonderful stay and the hut was everything we had hoped for and more. Thank you for letting us stay! You have thought of everything and it is very well equipped, we really appreciated all the little extras, from the chocolate and jam etc, to the blankets, books, candles and twinkling lights in the tree. You have set it all up so well- we made great use of both the fire pit and the woodburner, and enjoyed some lovely evenings around each of these. The location was stunning, beautifully secluded and peaceful, with breathtaking views. The children adored wild swimming in 'your spot', we had a great afternoon canoeing with Wyedean Canoes, walked another day to Symonds Yat East and then up to Yat Rock itself. We also had a gorgeous Sunday lunch on the terrace at The Saracen's Head, and an impromptu meal there after our canoeing the following teatime. All of these things were recommended by yourself, so many, many thanks indeed. We loved exploring the woods around the hut . We would absolutely love to come and stay again. We really couldn't fault it and want to thank you again for what was a perfect stay for the four of us!
